Well, it’s finally happening: the year that felt like it would never end is almost over. We don’t know about you, but we’re more than ready to leave 2020 behind and look ahead toward a better and healthier 2021.

We’re thrilled to see so many eCommerce businesses coming out the other side of this ready to embrace what’s next. So pop some bubbly (you deserve it!) and review our list of three essential New Year’s resolutions to include in your 2021 eCommerce plans.

1. Prioritize adaptability and flexibility.

If there’s one thing everyone learned from 2020, it’s that life doesn’t always go as planned. We’ve all had to adapt in a variety of ways—personally and professionally—just to get through this difficult year. eCommerce businesses have had to adapt on the fly to provide experiences that met consumers’ evolving needs in the middle of an unprecedented modern pandemic.

Brands should expect to prioritize adaptability and flexibility well into 2021 and beyond. Experts predict that life will return to “normal” around spring or summer, but the effects on consumer behavior will have a lasting impact.

2. Make sure your eCommerce website is mobile-friendly.

It seems like this New Year’s resolution has made every digital marketing list for the last few years, but we’re including it again with good reason.

Beginning in March 2021, Google is set to roll out mobile-first indexing. This is essentially Google’s way of warning brands that if their website doesn’t perform well on mobile, it’ll be outranked. Websites that provide an excellent mobile experience, on the other hand, will rise to the top of search results.

3. Get to (really) know Generation Z.

Generation Z—young people born between the late 1990s to early 2010s—is entering the buying scene. And this demographic makes up an incredible 40% of consumers. Marketing to Generation Z is different than marketing to Millennials, the generation that preceded them. eCommerce businesses that understand this will have the biggest advantage in 2021.

Here are a few high-level things to know about Generation Z:

  • They value privacy and protecting their personal information.
  • They expect personalized brand experiences (think: rewards programs!).
  • They care a lot about social responsibility.
